36 SEO Myths That Won’t Die But Need To

A couple days ago I got my regular newsletter from Search Engine Land with an awesome article on SEO myths that just keep sticking around. If you’re an SEO you know what I’m talking about – those myths that you have to answer to every couple days and when you say it’s a myth, the client responds as if you’re an idiot because they heard it from some very knowledgeable person on a forum somewhere and that person had 37 posts so they must know a lot right?

Well Stephan Spencer, Vice President of SEO Strategies at Covario wrote a great article on 36 myths and while I do tend to disagree with some of the assertions he makes (as I’m sure he woudl disagree with some of mine) it’s a highly worthwhile read. Below you’ll find his list but to read the full scoop you’ll just have to head over to read the full story on Search Engine Watch. The URL for that is below the list but first – here’s his 36 myths:

    1. Our SEO firm is endorsed/approved by Google.
    2. Don’t use Google Analytics because Google will spy on you and use the information against you.
    3. Your PageRank score, as reported by Google’s toolbar server, is highly correlated to your Google rankings.
    4. Having an XML Sitemap will boost your Google rankings.
    5. Since the advent of personalization, there is no such thing as being ranked #1 anymore because everyone sees different results.
    6. Meta tags will boost your rankings.
    7. It’s good practice to include a meta robots tag specifying index, follow.
    8. It’s helpful if your targeted keywords are tucked away in HTML comment tags and title attributes (of IMG and A HREF tags.)
    9. Having country-specific sites creates “duplicate content” issues in Google.
    10. You can keep search engines from indexing pages linked-to with Javascript links.
    11. Googlebot doesn’t read CSS.
    12. You should end your URLs in .html.
    13. You can boost the Google rankings of your home page for a targeted term by including that term in the anchor text of internal links.
    14. It’s important for your rankings that you update your home page frequently (e.g. daily.)
    15. Trading links helps boost PageRank and rankings.
    16. Linking out (such as to Google.com) helps rankings.
    17. It’s considered “cloaking” — and is thus taboo and risky — to clean up the URLs in your links selectively and only for spiders.
    18. If you define a meta description, Google uses it in the snippet. .
    19. The bolding of words in a Google listing signifies that they were considered in the rankings determination.
    20. H1 tags are a crucial element for SEO.
    21. There are some unique ranking signals for Google Mobile Search, and they include the markup being “XHTML Mobile”.
    22. SEO is a black art.
    23. The Disallow directive in robots.txt can get pages de-indexed from Google.
    24. SEO is a one-time activity you complete and are then done with. .
    25. Automated SEO is black-hat or spammy.
    26. A site map isn’t for people.
    27. There’s no need to link to all your pages for the spiders to see them. Just list all URLs in the XML Sitemap.
    28. Google will not index pages that are only accessible by a site’s search form.
    29. Placing links in teeny-tiny size font at the bottom of your homepage is an effective tactic to raise the rankings of deep pages in your site.
    30. Using a service that promises to register your site with “hundreds of search engines” is good for your site’s rankings.
    31. Home page PageRank on a domain means something.
    32. Outsourcing link building to a far-away, hourly contractor with no knowledge of your business is a good link acquisition solution.
    33. The clickthrough rate on the SERPs matters.
    34. Keyword density is da bomb..
    35. Hyphenated domain names are best for SEO.
    36. Great Content = Great Rankings.

Wow – First Page Rankings Sure Are Easy …

Yesterday I touched on the Twitter rankings on the first page of Google for competitive phrases. Today I was tweeting while listening to an SEOmoz webinar and noticed that a friend of mine ranked on page one for “seo” via the Twitter feeds. My tweet about this then ranked me and my tweet about this irony then ranked. it appears that it’s easy to now rank on page one which is precisely why this “feature” will soon die.

I had assumed that for this to work well you needed a strong twitter account but I’ve avoided it until recently so only have about 100 followers. Hardly a strong account thought I’d trying to build those number by providing periodic updates and good info (you can follow me at @beanstalkseo should you feel so inclined).

You can view the rankings I’m referring to at

    From The Horse Mouth …

I know a lot of our blog readers are new to SEO and coming here through searches for SEO blog or SEO news. For you this post will be most helpful – for those of you who have been performing SEO for a while now – well, hopefully this will be a good refresher.

The post won’t be long – in fact it’s going to only be about another sentence or two and a link. Google has recently posted an SEO Starter Guide to help those just getting involved in SEO understand the good from the bad (according to Google). I won’t both outlining what’s in it – I’ll just link to it and let you read it for yourself. You’ll find the information at http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/11/googles-seo-starter-guide.html.

    Enjoy. :)

    Give A Little – Get A Little

Alright, I’ve noticed that my friends in the SEO community are being overshadowed in their donations to our efforts to raise money for breast cancer research by our clients, friends and even (didn’t see this one coming) to the people who walk by our house, read our sign and drop a donation into our mailbox. Alright people – that is kind of sad BUT it’s a huge plus for our blog readers, clients and others. We’ve now crossed $1000 earned and that doesn’t even include the $500 Beanstalk will be adding to the total.

And so I’m going to try something a little different – I’ll try giving a little and in return, I’m hoping that breast cancer research will get a little something back.

    Giving A Little:

I’ve been giving quite a bit of thought to what tid-bit of info to give so I’m going to leave that up to you to decide. We’re the #1 ranking site for “seo services” so ask away. Let me know what you want to know with the sole exception of “How did you get to be #1?” which would require a book of info but we’ll answer any one question. Send them in between now and the end of the week and the question with the highest number will get answered on our blog, even if it’s “a secret”. :)

    Get A Little:

The goal of this trade will be to inspire our blog readers (AND SEO’s) to give back in the way of a donation to breast cancer research. The donation is tax deductable, gets you a listing forever on our Run For The Cure page and some other cool incentives.

    So:

So, send us your questions by this Friday we’ll answer the question that we received the most of. And then donate – or donate first, it’s good for the soul.

We Are Not Rock Stars !!!

For some time now I’ve bitten my tongue on an issue that’s driven me nuts for some time – the ego involved in the SEO industry. I have WAY too often heard some of the more noted SEO’s referred to as “rock stars”. And who makes the reference? Other SEO’s.

Let’s face facts shall we … If I ask my neighbor, my dad or my banker who even Matt Cutts is I’m going to get a blank stare. Even the most recognized person in our industry is, to those outside the industry and related industries, an unknown. Rock star? I think not.

Now this isn’t to say that Matt isn’t a good guy and important in the grand scheme of search. He’s a great spokesperson for Google and obviously a brilliant engineer but a rock star?

If we want to take a peek at brilliance in engineering perhaps I could ask a simple question, “The Large Hadron Collider successfully completed it’s first test today – who was the chief architect?” A development in technology that could well affect the way we view our universe and our understanding about how the building blocks of matter and existence function. But they’re not rock stars – no no, to be a rock star you have to optimize web pages and attend conferences.

How about Norman Borlaug? Norman who? That’s alright, he’s not a rock star – he’s only credited with saving over a billion people and won the Congressional Gold Medal, the Nobel Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. You can read more about him on my blog post from July 25, 2007 if you’re interested but remember – he’s not a rock star. He didn’t get a site onto the first page of Google to flog a new acne medication.

As I’m sure you’ve all gathered – the term rock star itself is a bit of a point of contention to me. Let’s take for example Mick Jagger. Now, I’m not a big Rolling Stones fan but I know who Mick Jagger is. I’ll bet you do too. My dad does, my neighbor does and I’ll bet my banker does too. Why? Because he’s a rock star.

So what exactly got my blood boiling on this one (I could deal with the term rock star but …). San Jose. Now don’t get me wrong – SES San Jose was an awesome event, Kevin Ryan did an excellent job, and it was great to see Danny Sullivan there but one night after one of the many parties (if memory serves me correctly it was after Search Bash) a group of intoxicated SEO’s were heard staggering down the street shouting, “We control the Internet!”

    * Sigh *

I control the Internet !!!Alright, now it’s time for another lesson on how all those “tubes” work. We don’t control the Internet. The Internet is controlled by the guys that got picked on in high school. The Internet is controlled by engineers, caffeine and is held together with duct tape. True, we do have some influence over which specific websites appear in the results and thus do influence some decisions and consumer experiences HOWEVER do we control the Internet? Not a chance.

And so my friends it’s time for some of us (not all – there are some very normal down-to-Earth SEO/SEM’s out there) to find a hat big enough for their heads, a truck big enough to pack their egos in and come to terms with the fact that we play a role in Internet commerce and information exchange but we are NOT rock stars and we are not the end-all-be-all of the Internet.

But That’s Not To Say …

Now I can already predict that someone somewhere is going to twist this post into some smack on SEO/SEM (remember now – I’m an SEO), some rant about not being included in the rock star lists (I’ve made a couple) or some wish that I controlled the Internet (OK – you’d catch me on this one, it would be pretty sweet to actually control the Internet). The truth is, SEO is a solid job among many, it has some great rewards, and some excellent people but we’re not better than others and we’re not more notable than others. We don’t need the egos – we’ve got a good enough thing going as it is. SEO/SEM is a valuable service – let’s just be realistic about our roll in the world shall we?

And that’s my rant for the day.

    SEO Survey

I got an email a few days ago from Salman over at Lancaster University asking if I’d be interested in doing a survey on SEO and SEO tactics. There was nothing in it that crossed the line over into confidential information and thus, I was happy to do it. In return he’ll be providing me with the generic results the survey gathers.

When I emailed him to let him know that I’d completed the survey he emailed me back noting that not many of the people he’d contacted had completed it. Sad sad sad.

So my call out here is for all you SEO’s reading this – do a student a favor and spend a whopping 5 minutes answering some questions so his project can be a success. It’ll be good for all of us as we’ll all get a better sampling of the info. :)

You can fill out the survey here.

Jason Gambert – Oh Yes, We Trust You

Well, the story continues. Back in April we reported on the attempt to trademark the term “SEO” by one Mr. Jason Gambert. If you’re interested in the story, Jim Hedger and I also reported on the story on Webmaster Radio with our guest Sarah Bird from SEOmoz. You can listen to the podcast here.

Well the story gets even worse.

Jason has now been busted trying to manipulate Wikipedia to back his claims. He’s now been banned from editing Wikipedia at all. and this is the guy that’s wanting to trademark SEO just for the good of the community.

I won’t bother repeating the story I read to find out this info. You can read the details about what’s going on now the arteworks.biz site and you can also review the back-and-forths between Wikipedia admins and Jason here.

SEO: A Job Or An Addiction?

I was chatting with one of my clients today and he was noting how their site has been holding steady for a while in the top five and how he’s now nervous about updates. Funny, you look forward to them when you’re not in the top 20 and you fear them when you enter the top 5. :)

I realized that my client was not the exception to the rule. I get IMs, calls and emails every day from clients who monitor their sites for the slightest fluctuations. And then I recalled that when I launch my browser in the morning it launches with 4 tabs, 2 with different Google datacenters, one with Yahoo! and one with MSN – all launched with our primary phrase in the search box. OK, maybe, just maybe, I/we have a problem. :)

I decides to let me fingers do the walking and clicked my way over to helpguide.org’s list of signs and symptoms of addiction. Here’s what they had to say about it (their references are to drugs but we can all make the comparison):

    • Inability to relax or have fun without being high … um … in the rankings.
Do you relax when there’s an update going on and you’re not sure how your site is faring.
    • Angry outbursts, mood swings, irritability, manic behavior, or overall attitude change.
How did you behave the last time your site dropped in the rankings, even temporarily?
    • Talking incoherently or making inappropriate remarks.
      Normally towards a monitor.
    • Deterioration of physical appearance and grooming.
No comments needed on this one.
    • Wearing sunglasses and/or long sleeve shirts frequently or at inappropriate times.
Too pale from dark offices to not wear sunglasses and long sleeves outside – even in the harsh moonlight.
    • No longer spending time with friends who don’t optimize sites and/or associating with known users.
Social life? That’s what we do on Facebook when we’re having downtime right?
    • Engaging in secretive or suspicious behaviors, such as making frequent trips to the back room, basement, or Starbucks where Internet connectivity use would be undisturbed.
Excuse me, I just have to check on something quickly (… 2 hours later …)
    • Talking about optimization all the time and pressuring others to do it too.
It’s a great way to make money from home! And you can signup for the affiliate programs in my downline !!!
    • Expressing feelings of exhaustion, depression, and hopelessness.
This doesn’t apply if your site is in the top 10.
    • Checking your rankings first thing in the morning.
If you need to check your rankings more than you need a coffee in the morning – you have a problem.

So it was this that made me really realize it … I have a problem and chances are, if you’re on this blog, you do too. Because most of us don’t have a life outside our computers and SEO conventions (go ahead, admit it) I’ve created a Facebook group for us. Of course we’ll all probably chat about SEO and … ummm …. OK maybe I’m making the problem worse but if you’re not afraid then you can visit Beanstalk’s Facebook Page to join us on the dark side. ;)
