Brace Yourselves – Windows 8 is Coming!

    windows 8 is coming

With only scant months away before the pending release of Windows 8 this fall, the final build of the new Microsoft operating system (os) has already begun to appear on torrent sites. Some of the biggest concerns about the new Windows interface is that will not allow users to opt out of the “formerly known as Metro” UI. Prior builds still allowed users to create a shortcut on the desktop to bypass Metro and go straight to the Explorer desktop.

ZDnet reported that Microsoft will be blocking the ability of administrator accounts to use the Group Policy to allow users to bypass the tiled Metro screen. There has been pressure on Microsoft to at least allow corporate users to have the ability to create a bypass for compatibilities

And now for something complete different…

    autonomus Driving

Google’s automated cars are now surpassing humans with better driving records than the average American. Since the projects inception, the desire by Google was to create an automated vehicle that would be capable of out-performing human drivers and it seems they may have succeeded. Google’s self driver cars have now logged over 500 000 km (300 000 miles) accident-free without one single instance of an accident that was under computer control. Sebastian Thrun announced the project in 2010, and stated that, “According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.2 million lives are lost every year in road traffic accidents. We believe our technology has the potential to cut that number, perhaps by as much as half.” It would certainly seem that Google is on the right track.

First Self Driving Car is Licensed

It’s official, if you see a car drive by with nobody inside, the license plate has a red infinity logo, and you’re in Vegas, that really happened, you’re not just in bat country.

Google can now legally send it’s self driving cars out solo, with nobody inside.

I had to say that to myself to fully appreciate how impressive this moment is in history.

Sure this puts a twist on Driving Miss Daisy 2 – Drive Harder, but overall I’m very excited about the countless ways this will improve our lives, save gasoline, time, money, and most of all, lives.

    Hopefully Mr.Freeman won’t mind?

    Why Buy Facebook Stock?

Lets say you had money that isn’t already invested in proven winners like Google, HTC, Intel, etc.., and you wanted to invest in something a bit different, and for some reason wanted to gamble on something as fickle as social media (remember MySpace?).

Personally, even with that list of caveats, I wouldn’t be looking at buying FB stocks, and Reddit’s co-founder, Alexis Ohanian, agrees.

In an interview that is circulating the web like mad, Mr.Ohanian explains why he wouldn’t invest anything in Facebook, citing their support of CISPA as a primary reason. While I agree that the CISPA support is horrible, my list of concerns is a bit longer.

For my needs I’d want to pick a business with a clear path forward, not one with heavy investments from Microsoft, yet promote’s the competition’s browser :

    Use Chrome on FB
This is taken from the Power Editor tool in FB

I also wouldn’t invest in a company that’s decided it’s crucial to place privacy so far behind promotion.

These ‘login to view this story’ roadblocks are a bane of FB and recent studies back up my own findings: people will not login to FB to read something. It’s much easier to highlight the title and right-click it for a Google search and that’s what users are doing.

When you stop listening to your users, and usher them to the competition, you really can’t be shocked when people don’t struggle to get their wallets out for a chance to buy some stock.

Google’s Self Driving Cars – More than a vision

As an SEO who loves 12 volt tech, cars, and robotics, I tend to focus on these updates from Google’s self driving car project. This morning I came across a video showing off the first official self driving car ‘user’ Steve Mahan, who is legally (95%) blind.

My only disappointment with the video was that Steve’s user # at the end of the video:
    “#0,000,000,001″
..would only indicate ‘billions’ and not a ‘googol’ of users like :
    “#00,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,001″
See how witty that would have been?

Okay I also wasn’t impressed with the parking, just getting the car into the slot like that reminds me of driving past the local bingo hall. Where’s the pride in parking accurately?

After seeing this sort of result from Google’s innovations it’s really sad to hear rumour that Google is pushing to trim the fat and look at reducing all the innovations it’s known for. Considering the volume of ‘Google is evil‘ and ‘Google just wants to steal our info‘ rumours that keep going around, hopefully the users can see that actions are more honest than words?

    A Minecraft Demo Video?!

Yes indeed! I managed to find no solutions to the darkness issue, so I took a video of something that looks great when it’s dark: Lightning!

    http://vimeo.com/39324558

In fact one of the fellows who’s helped with the detailing stole our thunder over on Reddit’s r/minecraft, but we’re cool with it. Would have been nice if he’d link over to the contest page, but we understand. *sob*

The video, even as dark as it is, does give a sneak peek of the Beanstalk we’ve been building on the demo server. Hopefully we’re providing inspiration vs. stealing all the good ideas. ;)

Speaking of ideas, we are still fishing for some good ways to detail the Goose nest and how to make ‘leafs’ that look thin on the Beanstalk. Serious brownie points are available for anyone who shares a way to get around those hurdles so we can focus on other parts of the maps.

Google gets approval for self-driving cars in Nevada

Earlier in the month I wrote this post on self-driving cars from Google:

    Google goes Jetsons

… in that post I was discussing how difficult it is to test the cars properly as state laws forbid the practice in it’s current format.

Yesterday, June 22nd, the ruling was passed as state law and Google has made a large step forward for DOT approval of driver-less cars.

Nevada’s ruling now gives Google (and other smaller companies) a chance at accessing a real-world test area for the vehicles and should be a great perk for the “silver state” that now draws a great deal of revenue from visitors.

Hopefully things go much smoother for Nevada, as similar efforts were made in Japan, and nothing but promises have materialized after several years.
