    Beanstalk SEO Announces Minecraft Contest

    Beanstalk Minecraft Sign

The official press release for our first Minecraft contest finally went out today (though our blog readers got an early start from a mention last week).  Here’s the press release:

    - – -

Beanstalk Search Engine Optimization Inc., the company that guarantees improved search rankings through the use of time-tested and ethical SEO services, is excited to announce a new Minecraft contest. For those not familiar with Minecraft, it is an online block building game that’s only limit is your imagination. With over 25 million registered users, there are some serious bragging rights to be had by competing in Beanstalk’s Minecraft contest.

Beanstalk is looking for the best Minecraft builders out there, whether solo, or in teams, to build the most nerdtacular beanstalk map possible. Something preferably hollow, twisting and tapering near the top (like a real beanstalk) that can be accended to its summit.

In our minds, no beanstalk map would be complete without a castle full of surprises to pillage at the top. Thanks to the Minecraft 1.2x update this month, it’s finally possible to fit a giant size castle floating in the clouds at the top of a giant size beanstalk. In fact a large part of the judging criteria of this contest will be to build a palace in the sky that will be the ransacking envy of your peers.

Map makers are free to add other relevant content or characters related to the many beanstalk fables.

2011 Puss in Boots BeanstalkA good example would be the recent “Puss n Boots” film which mashes together some child-hood tales.

Off-topic content will be judged the opposite. For example, replacing the castle with a model of the Millennium Falcon might be funny, but we can’t give out points for unrelated efforts. Please keep in mind that Beanstalk is looking for original content, so if existing designs are submitted, they will not be considered for judging, but rather fed to our pet Endermen for dismantling.

The rules for the contest are simple:

    • You must include an actual map file that Beanstalk will keep in it’s secret stronghold to load up and test in-game. (no videos, pics, or links to a server please)
    • Maps should take full advantage of the new Anvil map height limit available with Minecraft 1.2x.
    • Game mode isn’t important, and maps may be submitted from either ‘survival’ or ‘creative’, and they can be single or multi-player.
    • Maps with inappropriate Easter eggs, other than maybe some golden ones for the judges to mine, will also become fodder for our Enderbros.
    • Rumor has it that there is a very good chance that incorporating the Beanstalk logo into your design will gain favor with the judges, but this sort of butt-smooching should be secondary to brilliant design.
    • Designs should be made with Minecraft’s default textures in mind, so if you are using texture packs or mods, be aware that they cannot be ‘required’ and will not be considered in the judging criteria. If we get additional content with the maps we’ll consider using it for videos/screen shots after a winner has been picked.

To avoid a popularity contest, and keep some control, Beanstalk will select what they feel are the top 5 maps. The winner from the top five will be selected by the Minecraft community to keep the results impartial. So if your map makes the top 5, make sure to tell all your diamond hunting friends to vote.

    First Prize

    – For the best beanstalk map is an Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) tablet. We will purchase a brand new Acer Iconia Tab A100 (NVIDIA Tegra 2 Dual-Core 1.0GHz, 1GB DDR2, 8GB Storage, 7″ Multi-Touch Display, and Dual Webcams) that we will install Minecraft Pocket Edition on before shipping it to the winner.

Beanstalk is also working on prizes for those who finish in the top five and we might even add in a few Easter Egg prizes throughout. At a minimum, the names and mapping skills of the best entries will be featured on Beanstalk’s site. Enter today and you could have your friends making creeper faces when you win this sweet tablet.

The Beanstalk Minecraft contest runs until April 15, 2012. Entries will be accepted at any time, but if you are updating a map already submitted previously please be very clear about it so we do not disqualify a map for multiple entries.

A demo server is running right here: mcbean.dyndns.org
.. and it has the Dynmap plugin, so you can take a look with your browser by clicking here.

The idea of this map is to show what we mean about ‘giant’ scale structures, and we also tried to demonstrate all the new features of the Minecraft 1.2 update as well. Hopefully the style of the building is unique enough that we aren’t ruining anyone’s submissions. ;)

Contest details and updates will be posted to the Beanstalk website @ http://www.beanstalk-inc.com/blog/tag/minecraft/.

    My Husband Came with Dishes

My husband came with dishes, and I learned a long time ago to accept them.  These aren’t your Grandmother’s Norman Rockwell dishes depicting sugary impressions of the so-called ‘American dream’.  They aren’t even the kind of dishes I can serve a lovely red Thai curry on.  They are satellite dishes.  Large grey, ugly satellite dishes affixed to the side of my otherwise attractive home.  Right now there are only two, but there have been times when I had to painfully admit all five dishes were in fact not a cruel joke.

    dishes

Being someone who was born and bred in middle-class Canada, my first concern with the dishes was not their lack of aesthetic appeal.  It was “People will think we are couch potatoes!  TV  is not THAT important to me!”.  But I love my European husband.  He comes from a place where satellite dishes are like toilets, if you don’t have one then you are very, very poor.  And besides, he needs his soccer.  So I put aside my egocentric concerns and pouted the other way while the dishes went up.  I even helped.  For what seemed like hours, I stood watching the television screen, shouting signal readings out the window while he adjusted his LNB’s (they could be miniature rocket launchers for all I know).  I am good wife, yes I am.

Then one day I was taught a lesson.  My husband was up on the roof doing some sort of mysterious repair to the chimney, when along came a gentleman walking his dog.  Upon seeing my husband on the roof, the dogwalker began asking all sorts of questions about satellite television.  And at that moment my husband was uplifted both in elevation and ego.  After 15 years of his wife quietly hating those fugly dishes, here was a complete stranger mistakenly assuming he was a professional satellite installer – because of the fugly dishes!  The gentleman didn’t think we were TV addicts.  He didn’t care if we were lazy or liked to watch Jersey Shore (we don’t).  This man simply saw a potential source of information on a fairly obscure subject. Finally, my high strung, forgiving, intelligent, patient husband was validated for his dishes.

The lesson I learned was in perspective.  Call it what you want, but clearly my experiences put a great deal of importance on the aesthetics of our home, particularly when it came to how we were perceived by the public.  So much that I lost sight of the existence of differing perspectives.  In business, understanding how consumers perceive the face of the business is a lot like using Facebook.  Once you get to know the new arrangement, it changes again.  The internal influences of consumer behavior will always be comprised of the usual elements; lifestyle, personality, personal finance, knowledge, attitudes, feelings etc.  And those characteristics shuffle around as they are affected by external factors such as, culture, sub-culture, ethnicity, class, experiences, family and the ever-ambiguous market mix.   Shifting and shuffling on both sides means the perception of the consumer ebbs and flows.

When you have an online business, your website is your face to the consumer.  People spend thousands and thousands of dollars on making their website just right for their consumers.  But assessment of your customer base cannot end there.  With the evolving state of consumer perception, needs and desires change.  Now here comes the important bit: every business owner needs a dogwalker.  You cannot always be the one quietly freaking out because ugly grey dishes are all over your home page.  Step back and trust the word of an outside perspective.  The key word there is TRUST.  Get someone fresh to assess your business, website or just the homepage.  Their external and internal influences will differ from your own, allowing them to see things you cannot. Listen to the dogwalker.

    Happy Earth Day !!!

Happy Earth Day everyone! I’d like to say that in the spirit of conserving energy and resources we were all going to turn off our computers and lights but I have a strong suspicion that our clients might now be as happy with that as the planet (and staff) might be. :)

But do what you can, reuse what’s possible and recycle the rest.

In the spirit of the day and of helping the planet, I’m going to ask for your help in building a playground for my childrens’ school. Their playground is being torn down by the city (admittedly – it is about 20 years old) but on the down side – they’re not replacing it.

So we’ve got to come up with the money to replace the playground if we want our children to be able to play and to that end – we’re fundraising. In this case, we’re holding an auction at the school. We’ve got a large number of items but we can always use more – we do have to raise tens of thousands of dollars after all.

You can see a list of some of the donation made by the friends of Beanstalk on our South Park School Auction page. Anyone who donates an auction item worth more than $100 gets some free publicity with a mention on our site and of course, you get to feel good. :)

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or woudl like to donate and item(s).

Beanstalk Gets Slapped For Our Guarantee

We’ve always tried to be ethical business people. We’ve been in business since 2004 and have had a guarantee since our launch. It’s changed a bit over the years but the heart of it has always been the same – if we can’t get a client into the top of the rankings then we haven’t earned our full salary. You can read about it on our site here if you’d like to see how it’s worded.

Well I got an email from the SEO Consultants Directory a few months ago noting that someone else in the directory had a problem with us offering a guarantee. Why others should have any say in how we operate our business I have no idea but at the end of the day we worked it out and the folks over at the directory were satisfied that we were true to our word.

Well alas – that wasn’t the end of it. I got an email last week that they weren’t listing any new SEO companies that offer a guarantee. When I replied this morning I got back a note that after 4 years – we’ve been pulled from their directory.

To be fair as we don’t offer the option to comment on our blog, here is the reply to my question as to whether our company would be pulled:

Yes you have. Dave, you’re guarantee is a prime candidate for our focus and one of the three that were read in detail that caused us to come to our final decision in this area. It reads like SEO Snake Oil and to the average consumer is going to confuse the **** out of them. That’s your choice though and we did bring this up once in the recent past. We’re really surprised that someone with your tenure and standing in the industry even has such a myth attached to their site in this day and age.

    Nothing personal, strictly business.

Thanks for being a long standing member. But this doesn’t work for us. And changing it now in a “reaction” to our decision would not be of any help either. This is sheer mumbo jumbo. We were almost tempted to use it as an actual example of what we were discussing and decided against it out of respect for our members. I think you were the only one out of our 109 Active Members who advertises this type of SEO Guarantee. And, we’ve caught some heat about it over the years and have overlooked it because we know what you are guaranteeing is usually a given with most successful campaigns. You’ve made it look like you are doing something that others cannot and then have slapped a guarantee on top of it to enforce that belief. Heh! And then you have a Google Guarantee? Oh boy, don’t get us started, please…

So I don’t particularly get the point. My favorite part is, “… have overlooked it because we know what you are guaranteeing is usually a given with most successful campaigns.” OK then – basically our guarantee is what most SEO’s offer but we just outline it and put it in our contracts. What then, is the problem?

At any rate – that’s my rant for the day and now I have to get back to working for clients. To be fair – if there’s a reply from the directory worth noting – I’ll add it to this post.

    Beanstalk Is Moving

Beanstalk will be suffering temporary downtime on phones until approximately 10am PST Wednesday the 25th.

We are moving to a new location with a larger space and unfortunately – they have to bring our phone lines down to move them.

The total downtime will be ~8 to 10 hours from midnight until 10am. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Emails will be answered of course though we will be moving all our staff, computers, etc. over the Wednesday so we will have to take care of issues on a priority basis. We should be back to normal by Thursday.

Thank you very much for your patience.

    Happy 2009 !!!

2009 has started off great thanks to Advanced Web Ranking and Top SEOs. Advanced Web Ranking made it a great morning by providing me with the monthly ranking reports for a number of our clients. So I suppose it isn’t *really* Advanced Web Ranking so much as a great team of dedicated SEOs and link builders who made that a great experience but I’ve got enough happiness to go around.

And Top SEOs helped make it a great morning by once again handing us two awards:

As with Advanced Web Ranking – I suppose it’s more our great staff that I have to thank for these awards but I’ll do that when I get back from holidays … for now I’ll thank Top SEOs for recognizing our hard work and presenting us with this honor.

And a big thanks to you as well – our blog readers and clients. We grew teremendously in 2008 and I’m looking forward to growing with you through 2009. Watch for some big changes to our blog frequency and free SEO tools in the near future.

    A Reminder

Don’t forget to change the copyright date on your websites.
