    Affiliate Convention & Top SEO’s

It’s 8:43PM on a beautiful Thursday evening in LA. I popped back to my room to check emails before heading off to Affiliate Bash here at Affiliate Convention. Despite a few stress points that worked themselves out due to the dedication of the organizers that show is going extremely well and I’d hope to see continued growth for this convention as they head to Denver next.

I had the opportunity to moderate a panel for the first time today at 9:15 on Alternative Traffic for affiliates (focusing mainly on social media). The panel was very entertaining. Some take-a-ways … use Twitter. :) I’ve avoided diving head-long into Tweeting due mainly to viewing it more as yet another time sucking activity and yet – some very compelling arguments were made for it as a great branding tool. Heck, I might even be converted. I have the twitter account @beanstalkseo – I just don’t use it much yet but the ability to provide instant updates to client, the community, etc. – heck, it just might save time overall.

They served a good lunch, the trade show floor was busy (great for the exhibitors and they’re why affiliates get in free :) .

I did my session in the afternoon on SEO for Affiliate sites. For those interested you can download my slide show via PDF here. Basically – the problem that many affiliates encounter is being too blatant and not providing real value in their sites. Create a resource that happens to include affiliate links and you’ll do MUCH better on Google (and convert better too).

Tomorrow I’ll have more time to attend various sessions. I only got to three and look forward to catching more tomorrow.

    In other news …

I also have to take this moment to note (tooting our own horn) that once more Beanstalk has been awarded Best Of awards for December in the following areas:

    So all-in-all … it’s a good day.

    Speaking At Affiliate Convention

Beanstalk’s Dave Davies (that would be me) has been invited (and accepted) an invitation to speak at Affiliate Convention in Los Angeles. The event runs December 3 and 4 at the Hyatt Regency and is completely free for all active affiliates.

I’ll be speaking on the topic of SEO for affiliates (a subject I know well as I got my start in SEO marketing affiliate programs :) . It’s going to be a great show and I’m really looking forward to it.

For those of you in the area, I hope to see you there. :) The price is certainly right.

Chatting With Rand Fishkin & Barrie North

We just finished airing a great episode of Webcology on WebmasterRadio.fm. Today we covered a bit of news including the free-to-attend Affiliate Convention – organized in part by my co-host Mr. Jim Hedger.

Our first guest today was none other than Rand Fishkin over at SEOmoz who discussed a great paper they recent published on link building titled, “The Professional’s Guide To Link Building” (which – I’ll point out – the fact that I’m linking to it in this blog post proves one of their link building points). Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in building links.

We discussed link profiles, what to look for when analyzing your competitors and how to determine the right strategy for your link building efforts.

Rand also discussed with us some comments made by Seth Godin regarding how to make money from SEO and whether or not SEO’s need to know code (apparently 21% of SEO’s polled don’t think they do).

After Rand, Jim and I had the pleasure of chatting with Barrie North from Joomla Shack who discussed with us the benefits of Joomla as well as other SEO-friendly CMS systems. We covered issues such as easy-of-use and what to take into account when first setting up your site.

If you missed this great episode you can listen to or download the podcast from the Webmaster Radio site here.
