Leonard Nimoy – “Mr. Spock” Turns 80

Not to be out done by his illustrious captain, Leonard Nimoy, who portrayed Mr. Spock in the original Star Trek series, turned 80 on Saturday and received birthday wishes from NASA and former co-star George Takei on Twitter.

Born on March 26, 2931, Nimoy’s career has spanned over 50 years and has included many roles on and off camera. Nimoy’s roles ranged from science officer Mr. Spock, a narrator in Sid Meier’s Civilization IV, many recurring roles in the Stark Trek movies and television series and even a short lived singing career. But it was the role of Mr. Spock that has cemented his place in the collective memories of his fans forever.

Even though he played the straight-man to Captain Kirk’s more boisterous "human" antics, Nimoy says he plans to spend his 80th birthday partying with "gypsies and vagabonds." From all of us here at Beanstalk SEO, we want to wish Mr. Nimoy an incredible birthday and our wish to you is: "May you pointy ears never droop,” and of course to "Live Long and Prosper"

Some fun facts that you may not have known about Leonard Nimoy:

  • His father had a barbershop in Boston, where one of the more popular haircuts given was the "Spock cut."
  • The Vulcan nerve pinch concept on Star Trek was invented by Nimoy when he and the show’s writers were trying to figure out how an unarmed Spock could overpower an adversary without resorting to violence.
  • He and William Shatner are the only actors to appear in every episode of the original Star Trek series.
  • As a non-commissioned officer in the army, Nimoy was in charge of a platoon that included a Ken Berry. Berry later said in an interview that he confided to Nimoy his ambitions to be a dancer and performer and Nimoy encouraged him to go to California at the end of his enlistment.
  • Nimoy opened exotic pet shop in 1970 after Trek’s cancellation.
