Kohl Vows Probe for Google

The Senate’s leading antitrust legislator, Wisconsin Democrat Herb Kohl vows a probe in to antitrust allegations against the search giant Google. He specifically stated that they are a potential cause for concern.

Recently major concerns have been raised over the company’s stealing of clickstream data from neighborhood WiFi, attempting to obtain social security numbers from children in a Google coloring contest and by attempting to sidestep net neutrality laws in a deal with Version.

There have also been concerns raised over the company’s ties with to the current government administration. Engineer and CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt is a technological advisor to President Obama, and Andrew McLaughlin left Google to join the Obama administration as a deputy chief technology officer.

In December the senator urged the Justice Department to conduct a "careful review" of the search giant’s recent attempted acquisition of travel search software firm ITA.

Kohl said in a news release on March 10, 2011:

"In recent years, the dominance over Internet search of the world’s largest search engine, Google, has increased and Google has increasingly sought to acquire e-commerce sites in myriad businesses,"

"In this regard, we will closely examine allegations raised by e-commerce websites that compete with Google that they are being treated unfairly in search ranking, and in their ability to purchase search advertising," Kohl continued. "We also will continue to closely examine the impact of further acquisitions in this sector."

It seems that Google’s efforts to increase their presence in Washington is beginning to create some enemies. Google spent over 5 million dollars last year on federal lobbying.
